As we head into the cold Winter months, there are plenty of ways that your household can save energy and cut back on outgoing bills during the cost-of-living crisis. Check out our top five.
Wash Full Laundry Loads
Switch to doing fewer (but fuller) wash loads! Don’t waste energy only washing a handful of clothes in a laundry load, as half-load settings save very little energy. A full laundry washing load is much more energy efficient. There’s also often no need to run your washing machine any higher than 30°C.
Avoid Standby Mode on Your TV
Unless switched off at the wall, your TV can still continue to use energy. So once you’re done catching up on your favourite programmes this Winter – be sure to switch your TV at the plug.
Assess Your Kitchen Appliances
Your oven and stove use a lot of energy – by using a microwave more, you’ll save energy because it’s much quicker. It’s also worth considering investing in a slow cooker or air fryer too, as they are some of the most energy-efficient kitchen appliances out there.
Close Your Curtains At Night
When dusk falls, make sure to close your curtains and lower any blinds as soon as you can. They provide an extra barrier to radiant heat loss, add insulation and reduce cold draughts.
Layer Up!
Often, we put the heating on when we don’t necessarily need to. Before switching on your heating this Winter, consider layering up to keep off the Winter chill instead. By wearing multiple thin layers, you’ll be kept warmer than a single thicker layer – this is because warm air is trapped between the layers acting as an insulator.
