Insurer Zurich has warned that outbuilding fires – in sheds, garages and conservatories – rose by 16% last year compared with 2019. It said the popularity of conversions to home offices, gyms and domestic drinks bars increased the fire risk. – BBC News
The data shared also shows that three-quarters of areas in the UK unfortunately recorded more fires.
There are many steps that you can take to help reduce the risk of fires in your property. So, as well as having an up and running smoke alarm installed in your home (and making the effort to test it regularly!) Here’s 5 things to think about when it comes to preventing fires breaking out in or around your home:
Who doesn’t love a scented candle? Especially now, as the Autumn nights begin to draw in. You must never leave a lit candle unattended in your home, as they can pose real fire risks. Make sure you put them out before you exit a room and keep them far away from curtains, throws or other objects. Always keep lit candles out of reach from pets and children too.
Store any flammable household essential items, such as kitchen or bathroom cleaning products away from heat sources, as they can combust. Instead, store them safely in a cool area such as a cupboard for example.
If you have a Tumble Dryer, make sure that it is inspected by a professional on a yearly basis to ensure it is still running safely. We would also recommend cleaning out the lint trap every time you put in a new load of washing, to avoid fire risks.
With technology being used like never before, our cords and cables can wear out quickly. Before you re-charge items, make sure you’re not plugging in a cord that is broken or frayed – as this can be a huge fire hazard.
When cooking up meals in the kitchen, don’t leave the area unattended. Especially when cooking on a gas hob! Fires can take only seconds to break out, so if you need to nip upstairs or pop out in the garden quickly – always ask someone to watch over the kitchen for you (or wait until your meal is done before being distracted by other tasks!)
